The Reception of the Holy Oils Blessed at the Chrism Mass & Renewal of Priestly Promises

The blessing of the oils takes place within the celebration of The Chrism Mass during Holy Week. This year the Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 26th at 7:00 PM in our Cathedral. During this Mass, the three oils will be blessed, and the priests present will renew their priestly promises.

Our pastor, Father Gagne will receive the Holy Oils that have been prepared for St. Peter Parish after the Chrism Mass, and present them to the people during the evening Mass on Holy Thursday.

The Oil of the Sick:
This oil is used to anoint the sick and the dying.

The Oil of Catechumens:
This oil is used during the celebration of Baptism, and symbolizes the strength, that those who are being baptized, will need to be faithful disciples of Jesus.

The Oil of Chrism:
This oil marks those who are ordained priests, consecrated bishops, confirmed and baptized, with the seal of the Holy Spirit. This oil is also mixed with perfume, and has a pleasing fragrance.

These holy oils are made from the fruit of the olive tree. The Oil of Chrism has a special scent added to it by the Bishop as part of the blessing.
